Life Coaching

Who needs coaching and what are typical signs that a coach is needed?

There is a misconception that a coach is only called in when there is a problem to be fixed. Whilst a coach can help at such times that is a very shallow view. A coach is a mirror to show the individual the grandest reflection of what and who they should be and could be.

Every need is different but some typical indications that it is time to involve a coach are when you become aware that your life is lacking direction – or that you have taken a wrong turn. This might be to do with losing focus, with a career setback or perhaps just a feeling that you are not moving forward as you would want. Perhaps you feel that the patch to your goals and desires is blocked and you need help to see through, over or around the blockage.

So how might a coach help in these circumstances?

Well coaching is a very proactive process and one of partnership between the coach and the client. It is sometimes compared with a therapist relationship but with one vital and fundamental difference. Therapy may look for answers in what has gone before. Coaching looks at the now situation and what is to come next.

This is one of the strengths of coaching which has led to its increased acceptance and popularity as more and more people become aware of its practical benefits. A coach will encourage you to move forward faster towards clear objectives. He or she will do this by providing positive, truthful, honest and clear encouragement. Your coach isn’t there just to be nice to but to tell the truth.

Is it too late for coaching once you become aware of the need?

No. It is never too late. I am sure you have heard that life is a journey, not a destination. We all need a coach at some time. I find it interesting that the population is becoming better informed and has a heightened awareness of life values. This causes them to ask more questions, to seek more answers and to be willing to change.

A coach can ensure that the right questions are asked and answered in the right way.

Isn’t there a risk that this focus on ‘self’ could breed selfish introspection?

There is always a minor risk but good coaching eliminates it before it ever becomes an issue. You see, part of a coach’s task is to take their coachee to a place of being totally responsible for all their actions at the highest as well as the deepest levels. This gets to the very core and essence of making a positive difference not just for self but for others.

When you begin to reach for your highest potential you will create an environment where there are no winners and losers – just winners. Effective coaching helps you create win-win situations in life.

So where do I find a coach?

There is absolutely no substitute for personal recommendation. Most of my clients come to me that way.

How would you describe the relationship between coach and client?

It is the union of two souls with a common intent based on openness and honesty. There is no point in having a coach unless you have the willingness to listen, the desire to take action, and a commitment to building a better life.

Your coach will not allow you to become dependent, indeed, will encourage you to become independent and free thinking. There will be a regular and open review of progress and you will both sense when it is time to move on. This may be when a blockage has been overcome, when an issue of balance has been restored or simply when you are ready to move to the next plane of your own development.

And if we asked you to sum up coaching in a sound-bite?

Coaching focuses you on your true attributes, others and about the world in general.
